The romantic city of Verona is famous for its large, open piazzas, Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and of course its grand Roman amphitheatre sat proudly in Piazza Bra. From June to September the arena is host to classic opera performances.

    Overview of performances


    Italian language opera in four acts composed in 1841 by Giuseppe Verdi to an Italian libretto by Temistocle Solera. The libretto is based on biblical stories from the Book of Jeremiah, the Book of Daniel and the 1836 play by Auguste Anicet-Bourgeois and Francis Cornue. The opera was first performed at La Scala in Milan in 1842 and has a romantic and political plot.

    In this classic love triangle, Aida, a Nubian princess is captured by an Egyptian captain, Radames. Aida is the story of three people who are forced to make difficult choices.

    Tosca the opera is in three acts by Giacomo Puccini. It premiered in Teatro Costanzi in Rome in 1900. Based on Victorien Sardou's 1887 French language dramatic play, La Tosca, it is a melodramatic piece set in Rome in the 1800s when the Kingdom of Naples's control of Rome was threatened by Napoleon's invasion of Italy.

    Don Giovanni

    Don Giovanni an opera in two acts with music by Wolfgang Mozart and Italian ilbretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte. Although sometimes classified a comic, it is a mixture of comedy, melodrama and supernatural elements.

    The Barber of Seville

    Il Barbiere di Siviglia an opera in two acts by Gioacino Rossini with an Italian libretto by Cesare Sterbini. It premiered in 1816 and is considered one of the greatest masterpieces of comedy within music.

    Romeo and Juliet

    Shakespeare's story is a tragedy about two star-crossed lovers whose deaths unite their feuding families.
