  • So what's it like?

Garda sits in its own bay between La Rocca's cliff and the pretty peninsula that's home to Punta San Vigilio. The town's tree-lined promenade stretches along the water's edge for over a mile and is filled with gelaterias, busy bars and restaurants. From here you look across Lake Garda's widest part and can see as far as Sirmione's peninsular, stuck out on the south of the lake. The medieval town is made up of cobbled pedestrianised streets filled with local shops and bars that liven up at night with street entertainers and music, plus locals and tourists out for an after-dinner stroll.

There's a great walk up to the top of La Rocca - it's a bit steep in parts and a little rocky towards the top but once there you're rewarded with a large, sun-drenched grassy area and sweeping views over the lake. You can look down to Garda on one side, and Bardolino on the other.

For a gentler lakeside stroll, walk out towards the historic hotel Punta San Vigilio, north of Garda. There are plenty of bars and cafés to stop at along the way and a shingle beach, where you can sunbathe and take a dip in the lake. For a more up-close peek at the beautiful building, take the ferry north or head over on one of the cruise boats.

Bardolino is the closest town to Garda, about 3km away on the lakeside promenade. Great if you like a walk but it's much easier if you hire a bike. All the other towns on Lake Garda are easily accessible by ferry too, but it's best to plan your day around the ferry timetable as they're not quite frequent enough to just turn up and catch one.

If you want to experience the highlights of the surrounding area, try our Classic Italian Discovery Package and take in the scenery of the Dolomite mountains, immerse yourself in the culture of Venice and explore the beautiful city of Verona. Or if you want to see more of Lake Garda itself try our Lake Garda Discovery Package and enjoy a relaxing day touring Lake Garda, a wine tour at one of Lake Garda's famous vineyards and a day spent immersed in the culture of Venice. If you're more interested in Italy's world renowned cuisine, try our Flavours of Italy Discovery Package. Stay at the Hotel Eden in Garda and learn about Italy's famous flavours on an Italian food tour and visit to a local vineyard. And if spectacular cities are more your thing, explore some of Shakespeare's famous settings in our Italian Cities Discovery Package. Stay at the Hotel Sole in Garda and spend a day in enchanting Venice and another in fashionable Milan. Must book by 29 April 2015.
