So what's it like?
Garda sits in its own bay, between La Rocca's cliff and the pretty peninsula that's home to Punta San Vigilio. The town's tree-lined promenade stretches along the waters edge for over a mile and is filled with gelaterias, busy bars and restaurants. From here you look across Lake Garda's widest part where you can even see as far as Sirmione's peninsular, stuck out on the south of the lake. The medieval town is made up of winding, cobbled, pedestrianised streets filled with local shops and bars that liven up at night with street entertainers and music, plus locals and tourists out for an after dinner stroll.
There's a great walk up to the top of La Rocca - it's a bit steep in parts and a little rocky towards the top but once there you're rewarded with a large, sun-drenched grassy area and sweeping views over the lake. You can look down to Garda on one side, and Bardolino on the other.
For a more gentle lakeside stroll, walk out towards Punta San Vigilio, north of Garda. There are plenty of bars and cafés to stop at along the way and a shingle beach to sunbathe and take a dip in the lake. For a more up close peak at this historic building and hotel, take the ferry north or head over on one of the cruise boats.
Bardolino is the closest town to Garda, about 3km away on the lakeside promenade. Great if you like a walk but it's much easier if you hire a bike. All the other towns on Lake Garda are really easily accessible by ferry too, but it's best to plan your day around the ferry timetable as they're not quite frequent enough to just turn up for one.
