More about the activities in Lake Fuschl

  • So what's it like?

Lake Fuschl is a natural glacial lake - home to some of the purest water you’ll find anywhere in the world.

Found on the outskirts of the Salzkammergut - the village of Fuschl am See lies in the heart of a nature reserve and is famed for its turquoise blue coloured waters. Formed during Austria's last ice age, Lake Fuschl has loads of history. The nearby ruins of the 13th century Wartenfels Castle and the local mill that still operates today after nearly 150 years are two popular places to visit.

The lake, however, really is the star of the show - the water being so pure that it serves as a reservoir for the surrounding province. Choose to take a swim in the sparkling, clear waters or just sit on the lakeside promenade and watch the world go by.

If you feel like getting active then rowing across the lake or cycling along the cool, pine-clad shore are popular activities. It’s a gentle six mile walk around the lake, suitable for family hikes - and there are plenty of little villages and beaches along the way to stop off to enjoy lunch, the views and perhaps a dip. At night the friendly bars and cafés of Fuschl offer a warm welcome, and you can even sample locally caught fish at one of the many restaurants
