Lugano sits next to the impressive Monte San Salvatore, from the top of this mount there are some fabulous views over the lake and the city. Lugano has a historic, traffic free centre with narrow streets, arcades, galleries and cafés. To note in particular the church of Saint Mary of the Angels, an unassuming church from the outside contains fresco paintings by Bernardino Luini, an artist linked with Leornardo da Vinci. Piazza della Riforma is the meeting point between the town and the lakeside promenade, with its attractively coloured and flower decked buildings it's a great place to enjoy a bite to eat.
Our opinion
Mediterranean feel with Swiss hospitality • Take a cruise on Lake Maggiore (Locarno) and visit the sub-tropical gardens on the Brissago islands • Take a lake cruise on Lake Lugano and have lunch in the picturesque village of Gandria before taking a walk on the Olive Tree Path • Spend a day in the region's historical capital Bellinzona

Getting about
There is an excellent network of boats, post buses, trains and cableways giving you access to all areas in the Ticino region and beyond.
By rail
The train transfer from Zurich to Lugano is stunning. You'll be whisked along the shores of Lake Zurich and Lake Lucerne before the train dives into the Gotthard Tunnel. On the other side, the landscape changes to that of a more balmy climate.
